It has already been over two years since Apple released its 11th generation iPhone 8 (and 8 Plus) in 2017. This may not seem like a long time, but in the rapidly evolving world of smartphones, two years can be an eternity.
The iPhone 8 was the first iPhone to feature inductive charging and included a host of other improvements over its predecessors. The impressive smartphone was announced alongside the more expensive iPhone X but both models are functionally more or less the same.
With the release of the iPhone 11 in September 2019, many people have traded in their older models for the newer version, which means you can now easily find the slightly older used iPhones at a decent price. But is it worth buying a used iPhone 8 in 2019? Let’s find out.
Why the iPhone 8 is still a good choice in 2019
The iPhone 8 is still lightning fast
The iPhone 8 (and 8 Plus) features an Apple A11 Bionic processor that makes it 70% faster than the iPhone 7. This is the same chip used in the iPhone X, which means it still holds up very nicely in terms of processing power and speed.
Picture-perfect camera quality
The iPhone 8’s advanced 12-megapixel camera provides a stunning picture and video quality that landed it at the top of every list when it was released. If you opt for the 8 Plus, you get the added benefit of dual lenses for even better image quality when zooming. As far as used cell phones go, you will have a hard time beating the iPhone 8’s camera.
Screen size and build quality
The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus have 4.7 and 5.5-inch display sizes, respectively. Both are very comfortable to look at, but if you often read on your phone you may want to opt for the 8 Plus.
As for build quality, the iPhone 8 added a new durable glass layer that looks sleek and feels robust. The phone is definitely strong enough to forego a protective cell phone case, but you might want to pick one up anyway if you tend to worry about dropping it.
As the first Apple smartphone to feature inductive charging, the iPhone 8 supports Qi wireless charging, which is a big relief if you get frustrated with having to replace broken charging cables every few months.
Drawbacks to buying an iPhone 8 in 2019
As tempting as it is to flat-out declare the iPhone 8 as the perfect used phone in 2019, there are a few downsides you should be aware of.
The iPhone 8 looks a bit dated
While the glass-backed design is stylish and sturdy, the iPhone 8 doesn’t feature an edge-to-edge screen like the iPhone X, and the bezels make the smartphone look slightly dated compared to newer models.
For whatever reason, Apple decided not to move to USB-C for the iPhone 8, instead opting to stick with a Lightning port. This means you will have to spend a bit extra on a power supply and USB-C to Lightning cable if you want to benefit from fast wired charging.
Verdict: is the iPhone 8 worth your money in 2019?
The short answer is yes, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are very much still worth buying in 2019. Not only will this smartphone handle your everyday needs and come with all the apps you could possibly want, but it is extremely fast, delivers gorgeous picture and video, has a good screen size and build quality and can be charged wirelessly. If you can get past the slightly dated look and lack of USB-C, you will no doubt be very satisfied with your purchase.
